Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia, it is the place for the biggest airport in Indonesia. Before tourists explore the country, normally they will stop first in Jakarta and stay for few days in the capital city. And after stop in Jakarta, people will continue their journey to the second city, Yogyakarta.
The most favourite travel route in Indonesia.
As my experience working in travel business in Indonesia, i noticed the most favourite route for travelers while they are traveling in Indonesia. The first they will stop in Jakarta as the place of the biggest airport in the country. Then they will start the journey to the east to Yogyakarta then to Bromo Montain and Ijen Crater. After that they will go across Bali Strait to reach Bali Island. From Bali they go to Lombok Island, Sumbawa Island, Flores and the last they will visit Komodo Island.
Why do you need to visit Yogyakarta.
Yogyakarta is a special region in Indonesia located in the south-middle of Java Island. The region is the only officially recognised monarchy within the government of Indonesia, ruled by a Sultan. Yogyakarta known as Jogja among locals is also the second most favourite place to visit in Indonesia after Bali.
It is the place for two phenomenal temple that is Borobudur and Prambanan Temple, those two temple is the part of Unesco World Heritage Site. These temples is the main reason why people coming to Yogyakarta. Beside of that, Yogyakarta is a city with rich of culture. You are very easily to find street art, traditional dance, street music and javanese local food.
It is good for you to make a stop in Yogyakarta during your travel time in Indonesia. I heard from many tourist that they always want to come back to this city after the are back home.
How to go from Jakarta to Yogyakarta
There are many option to go from Jakarta to Yogyakarta.
1. By Plane
Using airplane is the easiest and the fastest way to go from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. It takes only one hour from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Adisucipto International Airport. There is no excact price for the flight, but the range is around IDR 500 K to IDR 1,5 million. And fyi, right now Yogyakarta has built the new airport, and it is located around 2 hours from the city central. Always make a double check which airport both in Jakarta and Yogyakarta.
2. By train
Using train to go to Yogyakarta from Jakarta is getting more popular among domestic and foreign tourist as the government built double train track. It reduce the time significantly. There are three train classes in Indonesia, Economy, Business and Excecutive Class. Those three classes have different fasility and different time to reach Yogyakarta. You may please to check the schedule in local apps, named Traveloka or Tiket.com. I suggest you to book it early. As the train is getting more popular in Indonesia, sometimes you can miss the seat if you do not book it early. Choose the morning train, so you can see around during your trip to Yogyakarta. And please double check in which station are you, as Jakarta has several station, they have a long distance to reach each other.
3. By bus
Bus is the most popular transportation in Java Island among locals. But not many foreign tourist try to use bus to go explore Java Island especially to go from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. Possibly, due to not much information guide them to go by bus. This is the reason why i make this article.
There are many bus operator in Jakarta to reach many cities in Indonesia, especially in Java and Sumatera Island. Also there are many bus terminal in Jakarta, and the biggest one is Pulo Gebang Terminal.
What bus to go from Jakarta to Yogyakarta
It is not a must to have early book if you want to go by bus, as there are many bus operator to go from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. You can book just one day before or at the day before your departure. For the bus, you can check the schedule via easybook.com. And my suggestion is to go from Pulo Gebang Terminal as the terminal is located in east part of Jakarta, so you have the same direction to go to Yogyakarta.
And the cheapest way to go to Pulo Gebang Terminal is by using Trans Jakarta (busway). As they have many tracks, and it depends on where do you stay in Jakarta, so you should ask the bus staff, which bus should you take to reach Pulo Gebang Terminal. It will cost only IDR 3.500 to go everywhere by Trans Jakarta.
The most simple way to go to Pulo Gebang is by online taxi. You can download the application, Gojek. From the city central is around IDR 100 K. And check in the maps how long it will take times and please consider also the crazy traffic in Jakarta.
My experience to go from Jakarta to Yogyakarta by bus.
If in the previous paragraph i suggest you to go from Pulo Gebang Terminal as it become the main bus terminal in Jakarta, but now i will let you know another option to go to Yogyakarta by bus. Normally, I go from Jakarta to Yogyakarta using Bus of Safari Dharma Raya. This is the link of their social media account.
In Jakarta normally i stay in Teduh Hostel in old town, one of popular spot to visit in Jakarta. From the hostel i go to Safari Dharma Raya departure station in Kebayoran Lama district. So the bus go directly from their own garage or departure station without passing any bus terminal. It is more convenient for me because it is located not far away from city central or from my hostel.
To reach the departure station, i used online taxi application that cost me around IDR 50 K. And the bus will departure at 3.30 pm.Normally i will choose the Super Excecutive Bus (IDR 275.000 or Excecutive Bus (+- IDR 200.000).

Bus Rest Area
Normally the bus will stop in rest area for two time, the first is in Cipali Toll Road and the second is in Weleri District. We will reach the first rest area around 6.00 pm, and we will stop there around 45 minutes. The second one is in Weleri District we will reach there approx 10.30 pm. The time i told you if the road is no traffic. And we will reach Yogyakarta City at Jombor Bus Terminal around 1.30 am.
The time i mentioned to you can change all the time, depends on the traffic and any other reason.
Your arrival in Yogyakarta City
Normaly the bus has arrived in Yogyakarta City at Jombor Bus Terminal at 1.30 am. There is Mc Donald, you can have a rest there or you can wait the taxi in the Mc Donald. Because you cannot book online taxi inside the terminal, and the best spot near Jombor Bus Terminal to wait a taxi is in the Mc Donald, trust me!
And please, you need to confirm to your hotel that you have very early check in. Ask them if they can give you free early check in or not.
Hotel Recommendation in Yogyakarta.
There are hundreds hotel are available in Yogyakarta City. It is easy for you to find the hotel as your budget. There are a foreign tourist area called Prawirotaman. There are many hotels available in this area.
For backpackers i suggest you Yez yez yez All Good Hostel, Greenhost Boutique Hotel for middle range travellers. And Phoenix Hotel for luxury travellers. If you want to stay in comfortable villa with tranquil atmosphere a bit out of the city, Blue Step Villa can be your best option.
One day tour in Yogyakarta
There are a lot of things to do in Yogyakarta, but there is the most favourite tour for foreigners that you can do only in a day. Visit Borobudur Temple, Merapi Volcano Adventure with 4×4 jeep then visit Prambanan Temple.
1. Borobudur Temple
Borobudur Temple is the biggest Buddhist Temple in the world which is one of Unesco World Heritage Sites. The temple was built around 8th century. By visitting the temple you will learn about the great history of Java.
2. Merapi Volcano
Merapi is one of the most active volcano in Indonesia. Merapi has become our friend since any human living surround him. He could give the local people fertile soil, so they can grow any plants. But, be careful! When he got angry, he could ruin everything surrounded.
Please do not worry to visit Merapi, there is monitoring station that there is person incharge 24/7 to monitor mount activity. Notice will be announced for any increasing activity.
3. Prambanan Temple
Built on the ninth Century, Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. Back in the glory days of the old Mataram Kingdom, Prambanan is used as a Candi Agung for various royal and religious ceremonies.

How to explore Yogyakarta.
To explore the city centre of Yogyakarta, you can go with Trans Jogja Bus which cost you only IDR 3.500 to go anywhere inside the city, or use Gojek apps to go everywhere.
But please be mindfull that some tourist spot is far away from the city centre. Like Borobudur, it is located around 35 KM from the city, also Merapi Volcano, Prambanan and any tourist spot is located far away from the city. It is uncover with Trans Jogja Bus, or if you go with online taxi it can be expensive.
